Sotto il Monte - John XXIII
This itinerary includes a visit to the hometown of Pope John XXIII: his home, the church of S. Maria di Brusicco, the parish of Sotto il Monte and the museum house called Cà Maitino. The tour of the hometown of the Good Pope allows us to understand his biography, to know the place where he was born and lived his childhood. From the Pope’s home, we go to the church of S. Maria, in the locality of Brusicco, with its meaningful baptismal font and the altar where the Pope celebrated his first mass on August 15, 1904, in front of the townspeople.
Then a brief visit to the new parish church of Sotto il Monte next to which arises the chapel dedicated to the Queen of Peace that conserves a beautiful incision by Andrea Gusmai, showing the Pope.
A few steps away from the parish church we reach Ca Maitino, the summer residence of Monsignor Angelo Roncalli, now transformed by the ex-secretary of the Pope, Monsignor Loris Capovilla into an important museum, where the gifts that Pope John received from the most important heads of state of that epoch are shown. One can also admire the funeral mask and works in bronze that Giacomo Manzù created for his friend, the Pope. Here it is possible to observe the original furniture of the Pope’s chapel in the Vatican and the room where he died.
